Mark-Wahlberg-in-Lone-SurvivorReuniting with Universal following last year’s relatively panned Battleship, Peter Berg is back in the director’s chair, assembling a truly impressive cast for his return with Lone Survivor.

With just a few more months left on the clock before its arrival, the studio have released the first trailer, via moviefone, along with the first poster and imges, giving the first good look at the movie, which is based on a true story.

‘Lone Survivor’ is the true story of four Navy SEALs on an ill-fated covert mission to neutralize a high-level Taliban operative who are ambushed by enemy forces in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan.

Mark Wahlberg leads the stellar cast, alongside Ben Foster, Emile Hirsch, Taylor Kitsch, Eric Bana, Alexander Ludwig, Jerry Ferrara, and Yousuf Azami.

Berg is directing from his own script, adapting the non-fiction book, Lone Survivor: The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes of Seal Team 10, by Marcus Luttrell.

Best known for his work scoring Michael Bay’s first Transformers trilogy, Steve Jablonsky is composing the score for Lone Survivor, which is very much something to look forward to. With any luck, it will net Jablonsky his first, and much-deserved, Oscar nomination.

The studio are giving the film an early release in the US, thereby qualifying it for a run at the Oscars. After watching this first trailer, it’s difficult to decide whether or not that will pay off. On the one hand, it looks like a fairly clean approach to the military, which isn’t necessarily something the cinemagoing public want to keep seeing. But on the other hand, the cast is undeniably impressive, and Berg has some very strong movies on his slightly mixed list of credits, and here’s to hoping that this will one of his strongest yet.

Lone Survivor will be given an Oscar-qualifying limited run in the US from December 27th, before its wide US release date on January 10th, 2014, and it will then head across the Atlantic for 21st February. In the meantime, here’s the first trailer for your viewing pleasure, followed by the first poster and images. Let us know what you make of it in the comments below – does this look like an Oscar candidate?
