Kevin Bacon has joined the cast of Macon Blair’s ‘The Toxic Avenger’ reboot at Legendary Pictures.

Bacon joins the already cast Peter Dinklage, Jacob Trembley and Taylour Paige.

Written and directed by Blair, the film is said to be a “contemporary reimaging” of Troma Entertainment’s successful 1984 low-budget action-comedy, Troma’s Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz will serve as producers.

Drawing parallels to an eco-friendly ‘Deadpool’, the original centred on a struggling everyman after he is pushed into a vat of toxic waste, he is transformed into a mutant freak who must go from shunned outcast to underdog hero as he races to save his son, his friends and his community from the forces of corruption and greed.

Filming is due to commence later in June in Bulgaria.

The original film spawned a franchise that went on to produce sequels ‘The Toxic Avenger Part II’, ‘The Toxic Avenger Part III: The Last Temptation of Toxie’, and ‘Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV’. The property also became a stage musical production, a children’s cartoon TV series and a Marvel comic.

With a long and lustrous career under his belt, Bacon’s previous projects include James Gunn’s ‘Super’ and Fox’s ‘X-Men: First Class.’ He is currently starring in the Showtime Boston crime drama series ‘City on a Hill.’
