Already straddling two beloved geek-friendly franchises Karen Gillan has just landed her biggest role yet, in the Jumanji rebootquel alongside Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, and Jack Black.

Gillan followed up her iconic role in Doctor Who with a number of small screen adventures (Selfie and A Touch of Cloth being the most prominent), but her role as Nebula in the Marvel Cinematic Universe brought her to a far wider audience. She will be reprising that role in Vol. 2 of the Guardians of the Galaxy series and also in the next Avengers film.

Deadline reveal her character’s name as Martha in the new Jumanji film, which will surely pay some tribute to the loss of Robin Williams while building on the chaotic world created Chris Van Allsburg. Gillan will also soon be seen in the Emma Watson\Tom Hanks film The Circle.

From the early rumblings of a new Jumanji filmĀ  it was clear that it would not simply be a brash new version of the well-liked Robin Williams film from 1995. Indeed, The Rock himself took pains to confirm that it would not be a reboot but a continuation. This makes sense given the Ghostbusters nonsense which had ‘fans’ of the first films eating their own weight in self-righteousness, declaring that a reboot opened up a hole in their hearts where childhood used to be.
