When word first surfaced that Joss Whedon had been set to direct The Avengers for Marvel, I can’t tell you how happy and excited I was – a reaction I’m sure shared by the entirety of his vast fan base.

This was the man for the job; Marvel had chosen well.

And of course, every single thing that we’ve seen from the film so far has proven that early prediction right. We’re officially less than a month away from its release in the UK now, and things couldn’t be looking better for what’s sure to be one of the biggest and best films of the year.

After getting a set of new images from the film at the weekend, we now have six great new photos from the set to share, courtesy of Yahoo Movies, in which we see Whedon on set with his cast, as well as a brilliant photo of him holding up Captain America’s iconic shield.

Whedon is directing from his own script (the first to do so in the Marvel Cinematic Universe), and naturally we can look forward to seeing all of our favourite superheroes and characters from all Marvel’s recent films, including Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr., with Paul Bettany returning as JARVIS), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Captain America (Chris Evans), the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo, taking over from Edward Norton), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg), Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow), and Loki (Tom Hiddleston).

In the UK, we’ll be seeing the film released under the name Avengers Assemble, so no cause for alarm if you see ‘The Avengers’ isn’t playing in your local cinema.

The Avengers will be released in 3D and IMAX 3D on 26th April here in the UK (a day earlier than initially planned, giving us the chance to see it even earlier on Thursday night), and will then be hitting the big screen in the US a week later on 4th May. Anybody/Everybody else as excited as me for this?

It’s going to be immense. And as usual with these awesome new images, you can click to enlarge.
