Last summer, Universal’s Despicable Me was a resounding success that was really well received both critically and at the box office, turning a m. into more than half a billion dollars worldwide. Very impressive stuff.

Following the great news that Javier Bardem has finally officially self-confirmed his involvement in Bond 23/Skyfall, word now comes that he’s also in talks to lend his voice for the sequel to last summer’s terrific success, Despicable Me 2, THR report.

Co-directors Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud made such fantastic feature debuts with the original, and I’m really looking forward to seeing what they have in store for us with the second film. The plot is currently, and understandably, being kept under wraps, but I’d be willing to bet that it’s going to be another great one from the pair.

If talks go well, Bardem will be playing the role of a new villain, El Macho, who has a son by the name of Machito.

Steve Carell, who’s really been doing well for himself for some time now, will be returning as the loveable lead, Gru, and the majority of the rest of the cast are expected to return for the sequel too.

Despicable Me 2 is currently tentatively scheduled for a 3rd July, 2013 release date, which puts it just a few weeks before Monsters University on 19th July – two awesome sequels to look forward to in close proximity. With that date still being a while off, I’ll leave you with this great video from the first film showing the adorable Agnes (voiced by Elsie Fisher) in slow-motion. You’ve no doubt seen it before, but it maintains its brilliance no matter how many times you watch it. Enjoy.
