Acclaimed horror and action filmmaker James Wan has signed on to direct and produce an English-language reimagining of the hit Korean crime thriller ‘The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil’ for Paramount Pictures.

The project will see Don Lee, also known internationally as Ma Dong-seok, return to star after appearing in the original film. Lee was one of the standout performers in the 2019 crime thriller and will reprise his involvement in the new adaptation while also serving as a producer.

The original ‘The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil’ tells the story of an uneasy alliance between a relentless police officer and a powerful crime boss. Both men are hunting the same elusive serial killer, though each has their own reasons for wanting him caught.

Forced into cooperation, the pair navigate a dangerous world of shifting loyalties, brutal confrontations, and strategic betrayals. The story blends tense investigative drama with explosive gang warfare, creating a high-stakes cat-and-mouse thriller in which neither side can trust the other.

Wan will produce the film through his Atomic Monster banner in partnership with Blumhouse Productions. Atomic Monster’s Michael Clear is also producing. Lee will produce through Big Punch Global alongside Sylvester Stallone and D. Matt Geller via Balboa Productions. Additional producers include Chris Lee of B&C Group and Jang Won-seok, CEO of BA Entertainment.

The screenplay is being written by Shay Hatten, known for his work on the ‘John Wick’ franchise and the Rebel Moon films.

Hatten is building the script from a draft by Brian Helgeland, the Oscar-winning writer behind ‘L.A. Confidential’ and ‘A Knight’s Tale.’ Helgeland will remain attached to the project as an executive producer.
