The Terminator and Avatar director, James Cameron, has expressed his desire to resurrect Terminator with a new trilogy once rights for the franchise return to him in 2019.
Cameron, who sold the rights to the original film to producer Gale Anne Hurd for $1 once they had agreed he could direct The Terminator, has opened up in a recent interview on the franchise and how technology has progressed so much that it now lines up with what has already been predicted in past sci-fi outings. He also revealed that he has been in talks to revisit the story, in which Arnold Schwarzenegger played the lead, looking to reinvent the arc.
“The question is — has the franchise run its course or can it be freshened up? So I am in discussions with David Ellison, who is the current rights holder globally for the Terminator franchise and the rights in the US market revert to me under US copyright law in a year and a half, so he and I are talking about what we can do. Right now we are leaning toward doing a three-film arc and reinventing it.”
He has also revealed that Arnold Schwarzenegger would be part of the new franchise but didn’t disclose whether he would be involved in the whole trilogy.
Cameron was only involved in the first two movies of the original franchise, in which Terminator 2: Judgement Day grossed a huge $519.8 Million, but a further three more were made starring Christian Bale, Sam Worthington and Anton Yelchin in Terminator Salvation in 2009, while 2015’s Terminator Genisys starred Matt Smith, Jason Clarke, Jai Courtney and Emilia Clarke.

Think its ti,e to leave the Terminator franchise well alone. Directors like James Cameron and Ridley Scott need to just move forward instead of dredging up past glories.
It’s a franchise. failed yes with the last 3 films. I would reboot the entire thing, and find a new Arnold. He’s too old. And we never got a David lean style epic Terminator. We got “Salvation” with Sam Worthington’s dumbass character. I think they should take a look at the Dark horse Terminator comics, which were pretty damn good. But they need to leave Arnold out of this one. I will always love the origins like we all do, but he’s done and they need to take it in a new direction.
