A little-known indie feature called Avatar you may or may not be aware of, is being re-released in cinemas on the 27th of this month and Deadline.com have posted an audio file of director James Cameron talking to MTV about his future plans for the film.

As you can imagine he gives little away in terms of plot details and ideas but he does discuss the possibility of doing Avatar part 2 and 3 back-to-back.

A more interesting reveal is where he believes the world of Pandora could be heading. He’s currently working on the novel adaptation himself which will expand on the universe and can “ideally become a bible for any other writers who want to come along and riff off other Avatar stories”.

Is Cameron envisioning that the film will have the same long-term cultural impact to that of a franchise like Star Wars? It certainly sounds like it.

This to me seems like a long tease while he concentrates on his long-cherished project (an adaptation of popular 90’s Manga series Battle Angel Alita), which he’s been developing for years.
