Despite having been involved in the industry for a number of years now, Belle feels like something of a breakthrough role for young, British actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw, as she plays the eponymous lead in Amma Asante’s affecting costume drama.
We had the pleasure to sit down with Gugu at Kenwood House (where the film is set) – and discuss the role, and how she was attached for a number of years before eventually shooting. She also tells us how much she knew about the original story this film is based upon, and whether the lack of knowledge about the real Dido Elizabeth Belle allowed her some freedom within the role.
