Shown in front of X-Men: Apocalypse on IMAX screens, the new extended trailer for Independence Day: Resurgence (which runs for nearly five minutes) has been released today. Featuring plenty of amazing footage and more hints about what to expect from the story, it’s easy to imagine the movie finding an audience when it’s released this summer.
Fox are clearly relying on the nostalgia factor with Independence Day: Resurgence though, hence why Jeff Goldblum is so heavily featured. While Will Smith won’t be back, the cast includes Liam Hemsworth, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox, Brent Spiner, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Jessie Usher, Maika Monroe, and Sela Ward. Here’s the official synopsis:
We always knew they were coming back. After INDEPENDENCE DAY redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.
Independence Day: Resurgence is set to be released in June. Carter Blanchard rewrote the script which had initially been penned by Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, with James Vanderbilt also contributing. The latest draft came from James A. Woods and Nicolas Wright, so getting the right story was clearly a challenge, but things are looking good in this trailer!
Empire Online has released some new stills too, so check those out in the gallery below.
