Netflix has announced that Idris Elba will return once again as John Luther for a brand-new ‘Luther’ feature film, continuing the gritty, psychological crime saga created by Neil Cross. The upcoming movie will mark a reunion of familiar faces from the acclaimed BBC series — most notably Ruth Wilson, reprising her fan-favourite role as Alice Morgan, and Dermot Crowley as DSU Martin Schenk.

The yet-untitled film will be directed by ‘Luther ‘veteran Jamie Payne, who previously directed several episodes of the series as well as 2023’s ‘Luther: The Fallen Sun.’ Cross returns to pen the screenplay, promising another intense and shadowy chapter in the life of the brooding detective.

According to the official synopsis, the new story finds London once again gripped by a wave of brutal, seemingly random murders. Though John Luther has been driven underground, he’s secretly called back into action — but the question looms: how can he save the city when enemies surround him on all sides, and when every faction seems to want him dead?

The original ‘Luther’ series ran across five seasons in the 2010s, earning critical acclaim and a devoted fanbase for its dark tone, moral complexity, and Elba’s powerhouse performance. Wilson’s return as Alice Morgan marks a major milestone for fans — the brilliant yet psychopathic former research doctor who first clashed with Luther before forming an uneasy, magnetic bond with him. Wilson appeared in three of the show’s five seasons but was absent from The Fallen Sun, making her comeback all the more anticipated.

Dermot Crowley will also reprise his long-running role as Schenk, Luther’s once-wary colleague turned trusted ally within the police force.

The new film is being produced by Chernin Entertainment alongside Neil Cross, Elba, and Gina Carter under their 22Summers banner, with Tim Lewis also producing.

Production on the new ‘Luther’ feature is set to commence in February.
