‘Mission: Impossible’ and ‘Captain America’ star Hayley Atwell has officially joined Gerard Butler in the upcoming action-thriller ‘Empire City,’ which is set to begin filming later this month.
The film, directed by Michael Matthews (Love & Monsters), is based on a screenplay by Brian Tucker and S. Craig Zahler and has undergone some story refinements since it was first announced at last year’s Cannes market.
In ‘Empire City,’ a hostage crisis breaks out inside New York’s iconic Clybourn Building, forcing firefighter Rhett (Butler), his squad, and his NYPD officer wife Dani (Atwell) to fight their way through the skyscraper in a desperate mission to save the captives.

The high-stakes thriller reunites Butler with his longtime producing partner Alan Siegel through their G-BASE banner, alongside Marc Butan of MadRiver Pictures, with Paul Currie also producing. Leonine Studios, which co-financed the film’s development, will have Quirin Berg and Alexander Janssen serving as executive producers.
Atwell recently starred opposite Tom Cruise in ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning’ Part One and Part Two. She is globally known for portraying Peggy Carter across the Marvel Cinematic Universe, appearing in major franchises including ‘Captain America,’ ‘Avengers,’ ‘Doctor Strange,’ and ‘Ant-Man,’ as well as headlining her own TV series, Marvel’s ‘Agent Carter.’
