With both Joss Whedon and James Gunn directing movies for Marvel, fans have been wondering for a while now when Firefly’s Nathan Fillion will be given a role in the studio’s cinematic universe. Well, after making a hard to spot appearance as an alien in Guardians of the Galaxy, it appears as if the sequel will see him make a very different sort of cameo.

As you can see by clicking through the gallery below, Fillion is going to be playing Simon Williams, a character better known to comic book fans as the heroic Wonder Man.

The set photos reveal a marquee for the “Simon Williams Film Festival”, and show that the character starred in everything from a Tony Stark biopic to an action movie about Marvel Comics character Arkon, clearly inspired by Conan. Of course, seeing as these will likely only be featured in the background of one of the movie’s scenes, there’s absolutely nothing to say that Fillion will be making a physical appearance or seeing any sort of action as Wonder Man.

In the comics, celebrity Simon Williams was made into a being of pure ionic energy by Baron Zemo and became the impossibly powerful Wonder Man. Meant to aid the Masters of Evil in their campaign against the Avengers, Wonder Man instead found himself sympathizing with the heroes and joined their team instead. He has remained an Avengers mainstay ever since.

What’s arguably even more interesting about these photos is the fact that they reveal that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will spend at least some time on present day Earth…
