Comic book movies dominate cinemas these days, and while 99.9% of those already out and those on the way are superhero themed, there are a handful which aren’t. However, one area which has remained untapped is the UK comic market, with really only one or two notable releases reaching the big screen.
There are so many to choose from, whether it’s classics from the Beano and The Dandy or even obscure Marvel UK creations we’d like to think stand a chance of getting a movie (if Doctor Strange can, why not Doomlord?).
Here, we list just ten of what we consider to be the greatest UK comic book characters who are most deserving of having their stories told on the big screen. With literally decades of stories to pick from, it wasn’t easy to narrow down our selections to just these. Have we missed any of your favourites?
10. Desperate Dan
Westerns don’t do particularly well these days (just look at The Lone Ranger), so Desperate Dan could be a huge risk. Do you give him a realistic and modern make-over and cast a big name star like The Rock or do you bring him to life in the same way the live-action Flinstones movies did with that cast of characters?
Desperate Dan is a fun comic book character and a UK icon, but with the likes of Captain America and Superman dominating cinemas these days, is there room for a desperado who eats cow pies with the horns still sticking out?
It would ultimately all come down to how it’s handled and the tone they go for, and while it’s no doubt a tough one to crack to make it a hit, but we can’t help but think there’s some potential here…
