4.  THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW

There are very few films that have endured and achieved cult status as forcefully as the iconic campfest musical The Rocky Horror Picture Show.  Practically inventing the practice of “midnight screenings”, the film has maintained a legacy for its insistence on audience participation, a host of catchy musical numbers, and an electrifying performance from Tim Curry.

The story follows a hopelessly nice engaged couple named Brad and Janet (Barry Bostwick and Susan Sarandon) as their car breaks down on an isolated road.  In a panic, they stumble upon the residence of Dr. Frank-N-Furter – a transvestite who is literally creating a man called Rocky Horror.

This is the film that started the ball rolling for Sarandon.  Because of its wild popularity, she was soon able to translate her appearance into a future littered with fine roles.  There isn’t much in the way of substance here, but Sarandon still looks like she’s having the time of her life, and the show-stopping finale at the end of the film still goes down as one of the most memorable cinematic moments of all time.

It’s worth every minute of your time.  A must-see for any cinephile.
