5.  STEPMOM

SUSAN SARANDON & JULIA ROBERTS Film 'STEPMOM' (1998) Directed By

Chris Columbus’ weepy family drama Stepmom might seem like an odd choice here, but after revisiting the film several times over the years, I’ve discovered that it is maybe one of the most bittersweet and realistic accounts of unconditional love that has ever graced the big screen.

In it, Sarandon plays Jackie, a cancer-stricken divorcee who struggles to contend with the fact that her ex-husband’s new wife (Julia Roberts) will assume her role as mother to her children once she succumbs to the disease.

Normally, films like this are often held in little regard, labeled “tear-jerkers”, and relegated to a sub-genre that pushes it into obscurity.  Stepmom seems to be the exception to the rule.  Sure, there are plenty of emotional moments to spread around, but there is a great deal of truth at play here.  Sarandon plays the protective Jackie with grace and understandable coldness – a seemingly impossible trade-off, but under her keen ability it works with tremendous effect.

Opposite Roberts, a strong actress in her own right, Sarandon delivers some of the best work of her career.  Great stuff, and wonderful performances from then rising stars Jena Malone and Liam Aiken.
