Philippe Petit (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) in TriStar Pictures' THE WALK.

Heist movies are always fun, and that’s probably why Hollywood makes so many of them! Even the worst the genre has to offer provide a great rush when the team manage to pull off their plan, though some exceed expectations by delivering an original take on a familiar premise. Those are the ones which offer true escapism and moments which stick with you.

While we’ve all probably imagined ourselves robbing a bank or pulling off an amazingly daring plan guaranteed to end in riches, that’s never going to happen (well, unless you’re keen on spending time behind bars),¬†and that’s a big part of what makes these movies so great.

The films listed here all fit the bill in regards to delivering that sort of wish fulfilment and are responsible for bringing some of cinema’s greatest moments to us. Each and every single one of these were a unique entry into the genre and took a different approach to providing a heist unlike anything we’d seen before, and these are truly the best examples of those.

6. Ant-Man

Ant-Man

Marvel Studios has used their Cinematic Universe to explore many different types of genres (whether we’re talking about a period piece of full on sci-fi), and Ant-Man did a wonderful job of delivering a heist movie set in a world full of superheroes.

It kicked things off by showcasing Scott Lang’s talents as a thief when he broke into Hank Pym’s seemingly impenetrable safe, and later took that to the next level by having Ant-Man infiltrate both the New Avengers Facility and Cross Industries.

Director Peyton Reed made great use of some classic heist movie tropes in each of those, and of all the ways Marvel could have gone about introducing this obscure character to audiences, going down this route paid off perfectly.
