1. When Harry Met Sally – I’ll Have What She’s Having
Rob Reiner’s comedy drama, thanks to the outstanding writing of Nora Ephron, heralded the switch from the romantic movies of yesterday, with their misogynistic conventions and old-fashioned notions, to stories far more contemporary and relevant to their time.
When people think of the film now, however, they maybe forget the impact it had, and remember only this scene, arguably one of the most famous in all of cinema. Billy Crystal’s Harry and Meg Ryan’s Sally are talking in a restaurant, discussing one night stands. Sally introduces the suggestion that women fake orgasms, but Harry’s male pride means he is unable to accept that he doesn’t know the difference. Sally’s performance proves otherwise, at full volume in a crowded delicatessen.
Not directly food related? One of the customers certainly thinks so, declaring ‘I’ll have what she’s having…’
