The latest covers of Entertainment Weekly offer up our first look at Terminator: Genisys, the 2015 movie from Thor: The Dark World director Alan Taylor. Little was known about the reboot up until now other than it would pay homage to the originals and that time travel would somehow be involved (obviously).
According to the site, it begins in 2029 where the Future War continues. However, human rebels finally have Skynet on the ropes with John Connor (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ Jason Clarke) leading the resistance alongside his ally Kyle Reese (Divergent‘s Jai Courtney) and Matt Smith, whose character is still a mystery.
Reese is once again sent back in time to save John’s mother, Sarah (Game of Thrones‘ Emilia Clarke), but that’s where things change as she has now been raised by Arnold Schwarzenegger’s T-800 since the age of nine when her parents were killed. She even calls the Terminator – who has aged over the years – “Pops”!
Rather than the helpless girl we met in the original movie however, this version is a highly trained antisocial recluse who’s great with a sniper rifle but apparently not so skilled at the nuances of human emotion.
This is obviously a pretty major change, and how it’s all explained should be very interesting/potentially baffling. It’s a smart direction to take the franchise in for a reboot though, so we’ll have to wait and see!
