Earlier this week we brought you the first teaser trailer and poster for the upcoming two-part Luther special, and the BBC has now followed that up with the first full-length trailer.

This one sheds a lot more light on what we should expect from the show’s return, and it quickly becomes apparent that the tough as nails detective (played by Idris Elba) is going to be more roguish than ever as he continues to straddle the line between being good and bad.

“Luther’s back,” reads the synopsis for the fourth series. “Pitted against his most chilling adversary yet, haunted by the ghosts of his past and hell-bent on retribution, he’s drawn into a terrifyingly complex case that pushes him closer to the edge than he’s ever been.”

Series four of Luther was written by creator Neil Cross and will be directed by Sam Miller (No Good Deed). Along with Idris Elba, the two-part special stars Rose Leslie (Game of Thrones), Laura Haddock (Guardians of the Galaxy), Darren Boyd (Fortitude), John Heffernan (Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell) and Patrick Malahide (Game of Thrones), with Michael Smiley and Dermot Crowley returning as Benny Silver and DSU Martin Schenk respectively.

The first half of this two-part Luther special is going to air on the BBC on December 15th.
