The sequel will pit Earth’s Mightiest Heroes against James Spader’s Ultron, a villainous A.I. who gains sentience after being created by Tony Stark. Hank Pym was the creator in the comic books, but with Michael Douglas introducing that character in Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man, it makes more sense that they would turn to Iron Man in this case.
Joining the returning Avengers will be Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), a brother/sister duo with the powers to alter reality and run at superspeed respectively.
All three of these new casting additions are featured in set photos from Italy, with a familiar face in the form of Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye also spotted. Joss Whedon has previously hinted at the fact that we will see Ultron go through various forms in Avengers: Age of Ultron, and so even die-hard comic book fans may struggle to figure out which iteration of the villain we’re seeing below.
Either way, he has some help in the form of an army of what are likely also robots, but we don’t know at this point as just like Avengers Assemble’s Chitauri, they’re currently only men in motion capture outfits!
