When the Harry Potter franchise wrapped up with The Deathly Hallows – Part 2, it’s fair to say that the vast majority assumed that was it for the Wizarding World on the big screen. J.K. Rowling had made it clear that no more books would follow, and while spinoffs were always possible, Warner Bros. moved their focus to The Hobbit and DC Films Universe.
That made the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them announcement particularly surprising, though some initially wrote it off as a shameless cash grab by the studio.
Well, J.K. Rowling penning the screenplay soon changed that assumption as did the hiring of veteran Harry Potter director David Yates, and the reviews for the movie have been great.
While Fantastic Beasts definitely stands separate to the Harry Potter franchise, the movie still packed full of amazing Easter Eggs and references which tie to both that and the larger Wizarding World in what looks set to be a big new franchise. What you’ll find here then is a spoiler-filled look at those along with some of our favourite moments from the story…
10. The Obscurus
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them introduces us to the concept of a powerful dark force which emerges from children who are forced to suppress their magical abilities. While an Obscurus is not mentioned in either the previous Harry Potter movies or novels, it appears as if Gellert Grindelwald may have a knowledge of them thanks to his history with Albus Dumbledore. It’s revealed in The Deathly Hallows that Albus’ sister Ariana’s powers, “turned inward and drove her mad” and “exploded out of her when she couldn’t control it.” That sounds like an Obscurus, and explains why Grindelwald is looking for one here.
