Despite Jay Baruchel’s best secret-keeping intentions at this years comic-con, writer/producer Evan Goldberg has let slip that Seann William Scott may well star in the forthcoming movie Goon.

The Playlist report that after Baruchel (How To Train Your Dragon) told MTV in the vaguest of terms that a “bona fide American movie star” would appear in his upcoming hockey comedy, Goldberg unambiguously announced that “We’re hoping that Seann William Scott (American Pie) will be in the movie.”

Should William Scott commit to the project, he will have two competing hockey comedy’s vying for audience’s attention. Hit Somebody, Kevin Smith’s upcoming hockey comedy, already has Scott attached to star.

Although no specific release date has officially been announced for Goon, Goldberg has stated that the movie is running full-steam ahead, Goldberg currently co-scripting with Baruchel due to the former’s busy schedule. Michael Dowse (It’s All Gone Pete Tong), meanwhile, is currently attached to direct.

While each year sees its fair share of cinematic déjà vu (Streetdance 3D/ Step Up 3), there may well be enough room in 2011 for two hockey comedies, particularly after Baruchel’s winning voice-work on Dragon and miraculous salvaging of She’s Out Of My League.

That said, with The Sorcerors Apprentice on the horizon, such faith might quickly prove misplaced.
