X-Men: Days of Future Past brought the story of the X-Men cast we first met in the 2000 movie to a close, but there were still rumblings of those actors possibly returning in Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Apocalypse.

However, it appears as if the franchise is now moving on without them, as Patrick Stewart (Professor Charles Xavier) has confirmed in a recent interview that both he and Ian McKellen (Magneto) won’t be back for the movie which will pit the mutant characters against Oscar Isaac’s Apocalypse in the ’80s set sequel.

In a recent interview with Larry King, Stewart told the host: “I was learning quite a lot more about it last nigh. It is going to be looking very much at the earlier lives of all our characters. And so I don’t think we’ll be making an appearance.” This makes a lot of sense, as time travel likely won’t factor into the movie.

Professor X and Magneto will be in X-Men: Apocalypse of course, but played by X-Men: First Class and X-Men: Days of Future Past stars James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender. Joining them will be Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult, with more to be announced before production begins in Montreal this April.

The movie will also focus on younger versions of Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Storm, and you can read more about that here. Whether or not we’ve seen the last of the original X-Men cast remains to be seen!
