Screen Gems’ new horror-thriller Don’t Breathe has beaten many industry estimates over the weekend in the US to score a $26.1million opening to shoot straight in at the No.1 spot.
The film, directed by Fede Alvarez who made 2013’s Evil Dead remake, has delivered over two-and-a-half times its budget to beat many early predictions but some distance. With a 87% Rotten Tomatoes score, the film has been a huge success for Screen Gems and looks set to continue with some saying the film could finish with around $65million from its $10million budget.
Elsewhere, Jason Statham’s Mechanic: Resurrection was another new release, opening at No.5 with an estimated $7.5million while Barack and Michelle Obama “early years” drama Southside With You opened with $2.8million from its limited release.
Last week’s No.1, Warner Bros. and DC’s Suicide Squad, took $12.2million is its 4th weekend to bring its domestic total to around $283million while its worldwide gross topped $636million this past week which sees the film 8th in the year’s worldwide grosses charts.
Don’t Breathe, starring Jane Levy and Stephen Lang, opens in UK cinemas on September 9th.
It’s got a pretty good rating so one to watch.
