I have been asked a couple of times how I came to be writing for HeyUGuys and I confess I am not sure how the ball got rolling. A tweet from the site saying that they were looking to recruit more writers somehow found its way into my Twitter feed and I promptly e-mailed in, expressing my enthusiasm to get involved. A few short weeks and a load of frenetic film writing later and I was on board and happy as a pig in muck. I love writing and I love films and the opportunity to combine both every day for a site as well regarded as this one is a real privilege.
I have been writing for the site now since the summer, almost entirely in reporting the news, but occasionally dipping into DVD reviews. It is great fun and a thoroughly enjoyable challenge to my burgeoning writing skills and perhaps the thing that has surprised me the most is the almost breath-taking volume of film-related news out there. There is always something happening, going into production, casting, developing, releasing a trailer and so forth. A lot of the time, I am writing about films I do not necessarily know much about and it is great to find out about upcoming projects that hadn’t yet been on my radar. Other times, I get to write about something I am already enthused about and that is perhaps the most satisfying experience. Being able to write about the first bootlegged Thor trailer, or casting rumours for Superman, or review 80’s action throwback The Expendables have been particular highlights, as has been exchanging ideas and opinions with the rest of the HUG team about everything from the merits of The Dark Knight, to our favourite films, to Christmas-themed favourites.
2011 looks like being another awesome year, with the usual raft of summer blockbusters and Oscar-leaning late winter/early spring releases. What am I most eagerly anticipating for 2011? Sucker Punch and Thor. My fondest memories of 2010? Hit Girl rescuing Kick-Ass and Big Daddy, or Joseph Gordon-Levitt fighting in a rolling corridor in Inception. It has been a great year working for HeyUGuys and I cannot wait to get stuck into another year of film writing.

Dave has been writing for HeyUGuys since mid-2010 and has found them to be the most intelligent, friendly, erudite and insightful bunch of film fans you could hope to work with. He's gone from ham-fisted attempts at writing the news to interviewing Lawrence Bender, Renny Harlin and Julian Glover, to writing articles about things he loves that people have actually read. He has fairly broad tastes as far as films are concerned, though given the choice he's likely to go for Con Air over Battleship Potemkin most days. He's pretty sure that 2001: A Space Odyssey is the most overrated mess in cinematic history.
