Daniel Craig in Talks to Star in the Hollywood Remake of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

According to The Wrap Daniel Craig is close to a deal to star as Mikael Blomkvist in the David Fincher directed adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

This is the second time that the first book in Stieg Larsson’s The Millenium Trilogy sees a film adaptation, with the original recently released in the UK and US and the two sequels following it this summer.

Blomkvist was played by Michael Nyqvist in the original Swedish adaptation and there were previously rumours that Brad Pitt was interested in the role in the US version. Daniel Craig is now apparently the front runner for the role though.

With James Bond 23 delayed indefinitely Daniel Craig probably has some room in his working schedule for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and I have to say that I don’t think he’s a bad choice. As long as they don’t try and make the Blomkvist character too cool he could work in the role. Most people probably associate Craig with James Bond but other roles such as his performance in Infamous have made it clear that he is a solid actor and has more depth than the Bond films perhaps give him a chance to explore.

There is still no definite news on who will play the titular Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Lisbeth Salander, but she has big shoes to fill following the excellent performance by Noomi Rapace in the Swedish version.

I really enjoyed the Swedish film of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and I’m still not entirely sure I understand the need for a US remake, but I have some faith in Fincher to pull it off. What do you think about the Fincher remake and Daniel Craig as Blomkvist?

  1. I'm still against the thought of making an American version of this. I don't think it's necessary at all. The Swedish version was great. That being said, if they feel the need to continue, I'm ok with Daniel Craig being cast. I'm most concerned with the Salander role. I have a feeling they are going to really mess that one up.

  3. I am also against it, though if anyone could match the masterful directing of the Swedish version, Fincher's filmography indicates he could be a kindred spirit. I too am most concerned with Noomi Rapace being replaced. I can't think of even one actress in Hollywood with the kind of dark intensity and whipcord strength she brought to the film. A friend and I went for a girl's night out to see the Swedish version which was playing against Sex and the City 2 a few days ago. If you've seen the Girl with a Dragon Tattoo, you can imagine the contrast and how easy it was for us to see the difference between a “chick flick” in Hollywood and this…fist bumping girl power dark and desperate tale of survival. We certainly felt we saw the better film and haven't stopped talking about it since.
