The Conjuring 2 has been another huge horror hit for director James Wan, and just like the first instalment, the movie has inspired a spinoff. The demonic Nun is going to be the focus of a movie which has been titled The Nun and is currently being written by David Leslie Johnson (he co-wrote the horror sequel). Wan meanwhile will produce alongside Peter Safran.

The Hollywood Reporter notes that the Nun wasn’t added to The Conjuring 2 until three months before the movie’s release. However, don’t be too cynical in thinking that the studio forced Wan to add her in with last minute reshoots because they wanted another spinoff.

Apparently, the movie’s original antagonist was your standard horned demon, but Wan came up with The Nun late in the game and New Line let him add her in as the new big bad.

The Conjuring also inspired a spinoff in the form of Annabelle in 2014. That was panned by critics, but ended up grossing $256 million worldwide, an amount nearly forty times its budget. As a result, a sequel is being planned for 2017, and it’s easy to understand why New Line is more than happy to push forward with another of those after finding such success.

More details on this spinoff will no doubt be revealed in the coming months, but learning more about that Nun could be pretty fun (and downright terrifying if handled the right way).
