 9) Melancholia

melancholia

Lars Von Trier’s approach to the disaster movie is almost the polar opposite to the likes of Roland Emmerich’s. A slow burning, purely character based look at the imminent destruction of the world.

Melancholia is populated by human beings, not caricatures and archetypes. Individuals face the coming apocalypse with different viewpoints; excitement, depression, and abject terror. With great, nuanced performances from Kirsten Dunst, Keifer Sutherland and Charlotte Gainsbourg, the film is the perfect alternative to its frenetic disaster movie counterparts.

Calm, measured and philosophical, Melancholia is a work of quiet beauty.
