We posted a story a couple of days ago about his possible involvement in director Randall Wallace’s intended Catherine the Great biopic, and now the young actor appears to be in negotiations to star in the film version of famed 80’s US drama 21 Jump Street.

If cast, he’ll join Jonah Hill (one of the co-writers) in this contemporary reworking of the story of an undercover police team of young-looking officers who infiltrate a high school to put an end to the youth crime and student drug-dealing.

The original series was the brainchild of the late Stephen J. Cannell and it also launched Johnny Depp as a major teen star (a position he despised at the time).

Deadline has received word that Sony Pictures (the studio behind the film) met with a bunch of potential leading men and that Tatum and Hill matched up well. They were obviously looking to capture that odd couple-type chemistry between the two.

The film is being directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the duo behind the well-received kids animated feature Cloudy with the Chance of Meatballs.
