Kirk, best known for directing episodes of Game of Thrones Dexter, Luther and Boardwalk Empire, will take over from Kenneth Branagh, who declined the chance to return to the directors chair for the sequel.
Thor 2 is set for release on July 26, 2013, so will presumably enter production early next year.
Thor, which was released to approbation earlier this year, has so far grossed an estimated $448M at the worldwide box office.
