The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1986)
Largely unseen by Western audiences, and perhaps spurned on by a new surge of interest in the franchise thanks to the previous year’s Return to Oz, this anime series is based on four of Baum’s novels and ran for fifty-two episodes. It follows the ongoing adventures of Dorothy and her numerous trips to the land of Oz, including what happened after her first visit, and introduced new characters like General Jinjur and Princess Lulu.
If you can get past the now-dated animation, there’s plenty of original whimsy to be found in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (or Oz no Mah?tsukai if you’re feeling authentic) and is a culturally unique take on a world we’re all accustomed to. The rights to the series were even purchased by HBO in ‘87, and accordingly dubbed into English, opening the series up to an even wider audience.
