Bored of Bond? As much as I loved Skyfall, the disappointing Spectre (which it’s hard to believe was also directed by Sam Mendes) has put me off following another of 007’s adventures, something not helped by the unenthusiastic Daniel Craig. After all, it’s not exactly easy to root for someone who would rather slash their wrists than reprise the role!

While Spectre was a box office hit, it didn’t exactly live up to expectations, so what’s next for the Bond franchise remains to be seen. While another movie is an inevitability, that could be almost unrecognisable, especially with Warner Bros. rumoured to be taking over from Sony.

Thankfully, there are plenty of alternatives to James Bond, and what you’ll find here are the greatest spy movies which have absolutely nothing to do that British icon. Some will be instantly familiar and others you probably won’t be expecting, but these are all essential if you consider yourself a fan of the genre and fancy taking a break from 007’s adventures…

10. Jack Ryan

Jack Ryan

Outside of James Bond and Jason Bourne, the Tom Clancy created Jack Ryan might just be one of literature’s best known spies. While Kenneth Branagh and Chris Pine’s attempt to bring him back to the big screen fell flat, Harrison Ford’s tenure as the CIA deputy director in Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger was far more memorable.

Ben Affleck’s take in The Sum of All Fears wasn’t half bad either (even if it wasn’t anywhere near as good as those first two), and the three combined make for enjoyable viewing. Arguably one of Ford’s best roles outside of icons like Han Solo and Indiana Jones, his stint as Jack Ryan is a great addition to the spy genre and a nice alternative to some of the bigger names out there.
