From their early work with films like Blood Simple to the 2007 Academy winning success of No Country for Old Men the Coens have managed to compile one of the most diverse filmographys in the business.
One of the key components to the Coens’ continued success is their unrivalled ability to create weird and wonderful characters. It’s been thirty years since they made their debut and in that time they have created some of the most iconic characters in modern cinema.
Here are ten of their best.
10. Mattie Ross, True Grit
The Coens have always had the ability to write strong female characters as was highlighted in their 2010 remake of the John Wayne classic True Grit. Sticking even closer to the source material than the original film adaptation had done The Coens’ adaptation cast newcomer Hailee Stanford in the role of Mattie Ross.
Ross was a quick witted, strong willed teenager out to avenge the murder of her father at the hands of Tom Chaney and Stanford made her presence known, holding her own against screen giants like Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon, stealing the show in the process.
