Ben Affleck (The Town) is in talks to star in The Great Gatsby, Warner Bros. Pictures’ 3D adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s literary classic.

Affleck is circling the role of Tom Buchanan and, if successful in his bid, would star opposite Leonardo DiCaprio (Inception), Tobey Maguire (Spider-Man) and Carey Mulligan (Never Let Me Go).

Midwesterner Nick Carraway is lured into the lavish world of his neighbor, Jay Gatsby. Soon enough, however, Carraway sees through the cracks of Gatsby’s nouveau riche existence, where obsession, madness, and tragedy await.

Baz Luhrmann (Australia) is attached to direct a screenplay he co-wrote with Craig Pearce (Moulin Rouge).

Production is expected to begin later this year.

Affleck will be seen next in Terrence Malick’s as-yet-untitled follow-up to The Tree of Life, alongside Rachel McAdams, Javier Bardem, Rachel Weisz and Olga Kurylenko.
