Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice may have a score of only 29% on Rotten Tomatoes, but moviegoers are clearly embracing Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel follow-up as it has passed the $500 million mark at the worldwide box office after just five days of release. The movie also managed to break a number of records this weekend, and this is a very impressive feat.

Batman v Superman has earned a whopping $193.3 million in North America and $308.6 million internationally for a total haul of $501.9 million. The question now of course is whether moviegoers have disagreed with the critics (as they’ve so often done with the Fast & Furious and Transformers franchises) or if the appeal of seeing these two heroes together on the big screen was just too much to resist. Honestly, it could just be a combination of both!

We’ll find out what kind of legs Batman v Superman has this coming weekend, and while those negative reviews have no doubt put a dent in its box office takings, it’s quickly becoming clear that they’re not going to halt Warner Bros.’ plans for a DC Films Universe!

“We’re so proud that ‘Batman v Superman’ has become the must-see event film of the season for fans the world over,” said Warner Bros. global distribution chief Veronika Kwan Vandenberg in a statement released earlier today. “These incredible numbers are building momentum for not only this movie, but for the upcoming slate of DC superhero films.”
