The Thick of It, Veep and The Death of Stalin writer and director Armando Iannucci has had his new sci-fi comedy creation, Avenue 5, picked up by HBO with a view to produce a pilot and possible series.

The Avenue 5 pilot, which is the working title so that could all change, is due to film in London in 2018, the series is said to be set in the future, in space. No cast has been revealed as yet but the Radio Times may just be on to something. They have suggested a previous time lord, Peter Capaldi could work well in the project. The even went so far as to dig out an Interview in which Capaldi revealed he could be working with Iannucci in the New Year.

Avenue 5 will be the first time the creator has returned to TV since his hit Emmy winning HBO series Veep starring Julia Louis-Dreyfuss, in which he left after the fourth season in 2015 due to stresses on him and his London-based family, but he never severed ties with the Network.

Iannucci first came to fame with the Steve Coogan lead comedy Alan Partridge series, he has since gone on the create great TV and film content with the likes of Veep, the series The Thick of It; the movie In the Loop; and, most recently The Death of Stalin, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, he is also working on a Charles Dickens adaptation of David Copperfield.

There are no details as to when HBO plan on airing the pilot.
