Rite is based on a true story and centres on a parish priest in San Jose, Calif., asked by his bishop to travel to Rome for training in the rite of exorcism at a Vatican-affiliated university. He eventually performed more than 80 exorcisms.
As well as being based on a true story, Rite is also loosely adapted from Matt Baglio’s tome The Rite: The Making of a Modern Exorcist.
New Line will release Rite in January 2011.
Hopkins appeared on-stage at the Spike TV Scream Awards 2010 this weekend to present the first trailer for the film, which should make it’s way online in the next few days.
