Acclaimed actor Andrew Garfield has officially signed on to star in ‘Artificial,’ the feature from director Luca Guadagnino, to be produced and distributed by Amazon MGM Studios.
The film, scripted by Simon Rich (known from Saturday Night Live and An American Pickle), offers a dramatic yet comedic take on the real‑life, whirlwind boardroom saga at OpenAI in late 2023. The narrative follows the dramatic sequence of events in which OpenAI’s co-founder and then-CEO, Sam Altman, was abruptly fired and reinstated within just a few days, triggering a global headline-grabbing frenzy.

In the lead role, Garfield is set to portray Altman. Sources confirm the actor has now officially signed with the project, solidifying what was earlier reported as being “in talks.” Joining Garfield in the cast are Oscar‑nominated Monica Barbaro, expected to play OpenAI’s former CTO Mira Murati, and Yura Borisov, tipped to portray co‑founder Ilya Sutskever, the board member instrumental in Altman’s initial dismissal.
This appointment of Garfield not only brings star power but also reunites him with Guadagnino for a second collaboration with Amazon MGM, following After the Hunt, set for an October 2025 release.
Rich will produce alongside Heyday Films’ David Heyman and Jeffrey Clifford, as well as Jennifer Fox.
