The after-credits scene has become a staple of the superhero movie, regardless of whether they set up a future movie or reveal a big twist from the one you’re watching. In fact, many moviegoers are now left feeling disappointed when they stick around for a an extra scene which doesn’t end up being there. And let’s not even get into the movies we’ve walked out of without realising there was one.
Regardless, these extra scenes are not all winners, and some have been known to infuriate fans by being entirely pointless or setting up something which has never come to pass due to poor planning.
Here, we count down both five of the best and then five of the worst superhero movie after-credits scenes. Agree? Disagree? Be sure to let us know your thoughts on these and any we missed below.
5. Iron Man 2
Iron Man 2 was a superhero movie crammed with references to the future, but of all the Easter Eggs, it was this one in the after-credits scene which was most exciting. Back in 2010, it was still a little difficult to imagine the likes of Captain America and Thor starring in their own superhero movie, so this glimpse of Thor’s hammer Mjolnir was not only a clever way of setting up his movie, but also an iconic piece of imagery which intrigued moviegoers new to the character and fans who had loved the God of Thunder for years.
This scene also highlighted the importance of Agent Coulson and S.H.I.E.L.D. outside of Iron Man’s world, and the crack of thunder which concluded the teaser for Kenneth Branagh’s movie was the first stage in Marvel setting up another hit franchise.
