While many movie fans judge a new release’s success by its score on Rotten Tomatoes, reviews and word of mouth are ultimately most important in regards to the box office. It’s there that a movie is deemed a hit or failure, and without hitting certain targets, you can forget ever seeing a sequel (something pretty much every major blockbuster has now).
As time has passed though, numbers which were once considered huge are now deemed disappointing regardless of the budget. $1 billion has become the figure which pretty much every big movie is expected to hit, and that particularly applies to the superhero genre.
There are certainly plenty of those on the way in 2016, but lots of other big movies are also coming in what’s left in this very busy year. So, with that in mind, which of them stand the best chance of being the year’s biggest hits? Not all of these will hit $1 billion, but the majority are going to come close, and they’re all currently on track to be success stories.
10. Jason Bourne
The Bourne Legacy received a tepid response back in 2012, and the general consensus from pretty much everyone who saw it was that the real deal should return to redeem the franchise as soon as possible.
That’s going to happen later this year when director Paul Grengrass reunites with Matt Damon for Jason Bourne, a still very mysterious movie which is sure to be welcomed with open arms in a year full of massive superhero blockbusters.
While the nostalgia factor isn’t really high enough to send this one towards $1 billion, it’s easy to imagine it exceeding expectations if the response is positive enough. Based on the last two Bourne movies these two worked on together though, you can guarantee it’s going to be.
