After what seems to have been years of waiting, we’re finally starting to hear some concrete news about the sequel to 2009’s hit Star Trek movie; OK, so maybe the floodgates aren’t quite flying open, but there’s certainly a few leaks: first, after months of speculation J.J. Abrams confirmed that he would indeed be returning to the director’s chair, then we heard that Benicio Del Toro was under consideration for the role of the film’s villain.

Now comes news that the script is complete and has been submitted to the studio for approval – although writers Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof are apparently still rewriting and tweaking – and the film has a firm stardate. Er, I mean start date: January 15th, 2012.

But that’s not all. Industrial Light and Magic have already begun work on the film’s visual effects and are no doubt readying some awe-inspiring new shots of the redesigned U.S.S. Enterprise to stun cinemagoers. Sources also claim that the new movie will have a bigger scope than its predecessor, and as if to confirm that, Abrams and his team have already been out and about scouting locations. Somewhere in Hawaii is under serious consideration as a jungle planet, while a museum in Los Angeles is said to be appearing as a ‘famous Star Trek location’ – a tease that will no doubt lead to months of rampant speculation among fans as to what exactly that location might be…
