Ben Affleck’s Argo sees him returning behind the camera for his third feature, following the brilliant Gone Baby Gone and The Town. The film has debuted to critical acclaim across the board at Telluride and TIFF – you can read our own review here – and is very much a strong contender for Best Picture and a handful of other categories in the coming awards season.

With its US release right around the corner, the new poster has debuted online, giving us a close-up of a bearded Affleck looking rather awesome in the lead.

“Based on true events, Warner Bros. Pictures’ and GK Films’ dramatic thriller “Argo” chronicles the life-or-death covert operation to rescue six Americans, which unfolded behind the scenes of the Iran hostage crisis–the truth of which was unknown by the public for decades.”

Affleck stars as the expert exfiltrator, Tony Mendez, in the lead, alongside a terrific cast headed up by Scoot McNairy, Bryan Cranston, John Goodman, Alan Arkin, Kyle Chandler, Taylor Schilling, Clea DuVall, and Tate Donovan.

The film is based on an astounding set of real-life events, with Chris Terrio adapting the original 2007 Wired article by Joshuah Bearman, How the CIA Used a Fake Sci-Fi Flick to Rescue Americans from Tehran, which you can (and should) read here.

Argo will be released in the US on 12th October, followed by a UK release on 9th November. Having made such a big name for himself at the helm of his first two movies, it looks like Affleck is set to make it a solid hat-trick here, and we cannot wait for it to arrive on our shores. For now, here’s the new poster, which you can click to enlarge.
