End of Watch posterJake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña take the lead in End of Watch, by far one of my most anticipated films of the year.

David Ayer (Training Day) returns to the police genre once more, but brings to it an entirely different feel behind the camera – the first trailer is awesome, and this great first clip continues to impress.

“A powerful story of family, friendship, love, honor and courage, End Of Watch stars Academy Award nominee Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña as young Los Angeles police officers Taylor and Zavala as they patrol the city’s meanest streets of south central Los Angeles.

Giving the story a gripping, first-person immediacy, the action unfolds entirely through footage from the handheld HD cameras of the police officers, gang members, surveillance cameras, and citizens caught in the line of fire to create a riveting portrait of the city’s darkest, most violent corners, the cops who risk their lives there every day, and the price they and their families are forced to pay.”

Ayer is directing from his own script, with a fantastic cast supporting Gyllenhaal and Peña, headed up by the brilliant Anna Kendrick, America Ferrera, Cody Horn, Natalie Martinez, and Frank Grillo.

The film headed to Comic-Con over the weekend, and had to take the stage after Tarantino’s Django Unchained, which can’t have been an easy act to follow. But word from the convention says that End of Watch did it remarkably, which is definitely promising.

End of Watch will hit US theatres 28th September. And since we last heard from the film, StudioCanal have secured distribution on our shores, and will be releasing it in the UK on 23rd November. I can’t wait. It looks fantastic.
