Tom Hooper’s Les Misérables is one of the biggest contenders in the coming Oscar season, due out in the US on Christmas Day, and arriving here in the UK early in the New Year, promising to be by far one of the best films of the year.

We’ve recently seen the four terrific new character posters of our leading quartet, Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, and most recently Anne Hathaway and Amanda Seyfried, and now a new image of Jackman has made its way online.

“Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, Les Misérables tells an enthralling story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption—a timeless testament to the survival of the human spirit. Jackman plays ex-prisoner Jean Valjean, hunted for decades by the ruthless policeman Javert (Crowe) after he breaks parole. When Valjean agrees to care for factory worker Fantine’s (Hathaway) young daughter, Cosette, their lives change forever.”

The leading quartet are joined by a fantastic supporting cast, headed up by Sacha Baron Cohen, Eddie Redmayne, Samantha Barks, and Helena Bonham Carter, with Isabelle Allen starring as the young Cosette.

Hooper is following up his Oscar-winning film, The King’s Speech, with a highly anticipated adaptation, directing from a script by William Nicholson (Gladiator, Shadowlands), who adapts the original classic novel of the same name by Victor Hugo and the world-famous stage musical.

And in case you missed it back in September, I highly recommend watching (or re-watching) the extended behind-the-scenes featurette, because it is simply beautiful.

Les Misérables will be released on Christmas Day in the US, followed by a UK release on 11th January, 2013. I can’t wait. It is going to be brilliant. For now, here’s the new image of Jackman, which you can click through to enlarge.
