Jason Bateman is in talks to star opposite Vince Vaughn in the comedy The Insane Laws with screenwriter Jeremy Garelick directing, Deadline report.

The film will be produced by Neal Moritz, under his Original Film production company, who’s been a producer on all five The Fast and the Furious films, as well as I Am Legend, The Green Hornet, and every episode of Prison Break.

Garelick was a co-writer on 2006’s The Break-Up, which starred Vaughn, and he and Vaughn have been close since then. He also did uncredited work on The Hangover’s script back in 2009. The project is something Vaughn’s been wanting to do for a while now, and I think Jason Bateman, who also starred in The Break-Up, would be a perfect choice to cast opposite Vaughn.

In the film, the pair will play:

“Longtime best friends, who’ve shared everything, from college to the time both got married and had kids at the same time. Cut to when those kids are away at college, and, unbeknownst to their parents, falling in love. The best friend relationship is sorely tested when the daughter of Vaughn’s character gets pregnant.”

Vaughn has been a bit quiet of late, only recently starring in The Dilemma earlier this year, which largely wasn’t received that well (though I thought it was pretty good), and made just shy of its $70m. budget at the box office. He’s currently working on Lay the Favourite, starring Rebecca Hall (The Town), Bruce Willis (Red), and Catherine Zeta Jones (The Terminal), and the cast on that certainly sounds promising.

I’ve always been a big fan of Bateman’s, I think he’s a highly underrated actor who deserves more attention, and it’s been good to see some of that attention swinging his way recently. He’s going to be one of the leads in the upcoming Horrible Bosses, which is released here on 22nd July, and will be starring opposite Ryan Reynolds (Buried) and Olivia Wilde (Tron: Legacy) in The Change-Up, which will be released on 5th August. And of course, let’s not forget the highly-anticipated (if you’re a fan, at least) Arrested Development film, which I am so excited about.

Whilst I don’t love The Insane Laws as a title, the premise does sound like it could make for a great light-hearted comedy, and that’s the kind of thing both Vaughn and Bateman do really well. I loved The Break-Up, so having Garelick and Vaughn working together again, and throwing Bateman into the mix, sounds like it could be a big hit. According to Deadline, they’ve just done a read-through of the script, and if the talks go well, production on the film could start by autumn.
