After teasing the completed second draft of the final instalment of the Three Flavours Cornetto / Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy last month, Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright have announced they’ll be filming The World’s End later this year, and have released the official synopsis.

Coming via Deadline, here’s our first official look at what we can expect at the end of the world, with a release set for Spring 2013:

“20 years after attempting an epic pub crawl, five childhood friends reunite when one of them becomes hell bent on trying the drinking marathon again. They are convinced to stage an encore by mate Gary King, a 40-year old man trapped at the cigarette end of his teens, who drags his reluctant pals to their home town and once again attempts to reach the fabled pub, The World’s End. As they attempt to reconcile the past and present, they realize the real struggle is for the future, not just theirs but humankind’s. Reaching The World’s End is the least of their worries.”

This would certainly suggest that (what looks like) the first page of the script we ‘decoded’ last month is spot on – if you missed it, you can read that (unofficial) first page of the script here.

Working Title (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) and Edgar Wright have set the start date for filming for September, once Pegg has finished up Frank Darabont’s upcoming pilot, L.A. Noir, with Star Trek 2 now believed to have wrapped.

Wright and Pegg have of course co-written the script, like the first two films, and Pegg will naturally be returning front and centre alongside Nick Frost for what is sure to be one of the best and most anticipated films due out in 2013.

After Wright teased at the weekend via Twitter that the Ant-Man film he and Joe Cornish have been working on for years could finally be happening, there might be a question about whether that can still go ahead with Wright as director, as planned.

However, given that Marvel have announced all their upcoming releases through until the end of 2013 – Iron Man 3 in May, 2013, and Thor in November, 2013 – and Captain America 2 is expected to take the first 2014 release in April, Wright should hopefully still be able to commit to directing Ant-Man without any conflicting schedules – if not, perhaps Joe Cornish could step in in his place to helm his first big-budget blockbuster?

Marvel’s President of Production, Kevin Feige, has said that the as-yet-unknown Marvel film set for a May 2014 release should be announced during or before Comic-Con this year, which is in just two months’ time, so we should have more news on that front for you soon.

And for the ice cream-inclined amongst you, you’ll be pleased to know that, with a bit of luck, you’ll have seen The World’s End by this time next year. I can’t wait. (And, I’m sure, neither can you.) More as we get it.
