The first trailer for Supergirl has been released, and it’s fair to say that’s it a lot better than anyone expected! In fact, the upcoming TV series looks downright awesome with the very likeable Melissa Benoist (Glee) as the titular superhero and special effects which it’s kind of hard to believe are actually on TV.

Laura Benanti is going to have a recurring role as Alura Zor-El (Kara’s birth mother) in Supergirl, so the glimpse of Krytpon we get in this trailer probably won’t be the last we see of that doomed planet. Flashbacks to the hero’s childhood would make sense, but there is of course a chance Alura will appear to her daughter as Jor-El did to Superman in Man of Steel; it’s too early to say unfortunately. Regardless, they’ve clearly gone the CGI route for the planet and Kara’s origin story isn’t that hard to figure out. Like her cousin, she was blasted to Earth as a child – not a baby – and arrived at the same time as him. Some comics have changed that so she turned up years later, but the TV series clearly won’t be going that route.
