Comic book fans are demanding a greater number of female superheroes on the big screen. Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman are certainly a good start, but they stick out like sore thumbs when the next five years are set to be dominated by male characters in comic book adaptations.
There’s also a greater need for more female directors to make their presence felt both in this genre and in blockbuster filmmaking as a whole. Whether they helm movies featuring female or male characters (restricting them to the former would be in equal parts insulting and patronising), it has to happen soon.
Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones director Michelle MacLaren being hired to take on Wonder Woman is a phenomenal start, with more to come over the next few years if we’re lucky. Here, we present ten of our favourite female filmmakers who we would love to see bring any number of superheroes to a cinema near us!
10. Sofia Coppola
Regardless of her famous surname, Sofia Coppola has shown that she’s a filmmaking force of her own to be reckoned with, and movies like Lost in Translation and The Bling Ring serve as proof of that.
Of all the directors listed here though, it’s difficult to name a specific superhero who Coppola would be ideally suited for. Given her filmography, we’re tempted to go for something totally out of left field like Gambit.
Giving her the chance to take on a lesser known superhero like that to make her own could lead to great success, though it’s hard to imagine her struggling with an already established franchise either.
In an ideal world? Well, she would direct Captain Marvel with The Bling Ring star Emma Watson as Carol Danvers…
