Marvel Studios have crafted their Cinematic Universe in a way which means that their movies are both rewarding to hardcore comic book fans and accessible to regular moviegoers (who may have never read a single issue). However, with Avengers: Age of Ultron on the horizon, what exactly should you be reading?
Ultron is a villain with decades of history, as are new additions like Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch and The Vision.
As a result, there are almost countless comic books which can provide a better understanding of these characters and what to expect from Joss Whedon’s highly anticipated sequel. Some may even reveal potential spoilers, because who knows which famous story arcs Joss Whedon turned to for inspiration!
Here, we take a look at ten of the most essential comic books you should read before buying your ticket to see Avengers: Age of Ultron. Whether you’re a fanboy or a newcomer, these are all absolutely essential…
10. Age Of Ultron
Don’t let the name fool you; Joss Whedon’s movie is most definitely not based on this messy time travel story from Brian Michael Bendis. Ultron doesn’t even have a huge role in proceedings, but this might be worth picking up just to see how much of an impact his destructive actions can have on the world.
The story picks up after the robotic villain has laid Earth to waste, with the surviving and broken Avengers forced to turn to time travel in order to try and fix things. That goes spectacularly wrong thanks to Wolverine, and seeing how it all plays out is interesting, even if the execution isn’t quite as good as it could/should be.
